Nippon Shokken Recognized for Sustainability Efforts
05.25.2025
We’re excited to share that Nippon Shokken was recently featured in a case study by the Regional Water Authority’s Be Water Smart program, highlighting our efforts to reduce water consumption at our West Sacramento production facility.
In partnership with the California Department of Water Resources, the RWA awarded our team a $15,000 commercial rebate to support the installation of a new Process Cooling Water System, an upgrade that has significantly cut our water usage while improving operational efficiency.
Water is a key ingredient in both our products and our manufacturing process. At our facility, we bottle around 60,000 sauces a day. Previously, the cooling system used water only once before it was discarded. Now, thanks to the new system, that water is recycled up to five or six times, reducing overall consumption by 45–50%.
In just one example, water use in May 2024 was 281,000 gallons less than in the same month two years prior, resulting in a savings of 48%. We expect this new system to save over 2.6 million gallons per year, or more than 53 million gallons over its projected 20-year lifespan.
This project wouldn’t have been possible without collaboration across multiple teams, from city officials to our facility staff, and the support of the RWA and United Mechanical. We’re proud to be recognized for taking action and doing our part for a more sustainable future.
